The Cottage Cooking Club - November Recipes

My dear fellow members of The Cottage Cooking Club:

Now we are at the beginning of November and therefore into our nineteenth month of preparing recipes from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall´s “River Cottage Everyday Veg”. This month we will be preparing recipes with seasonal, late fall/early winter produce.

PLEASE feel free to substitute or add local vegetables to the recipes as it is always best to cook with what you can find at your local farmers´markets and greengrocers.




1. From the chapter of Comfort Food & Feasts:
Chili, cheese and rosemary polenta with tomato sauce (page 58)

2. From the chapter of Raw Assemblies:
Celery, orange and pecans (page 116)

3. From the chapter of Hefty Soups:
Parsnip and ginger soup (page 157)

4. From the chapter of Bready Things:
 Hot squash foldover (page 189)

5. From the chapter of Store-Cupboard Suppers:
Lentil and tomato salad (page 237)

6. From the chapter of Pasta & Rice:
Kale speltotto with goat´s cheese (page 280)

7. From the chapetr of Mezze & Tapas:
Beetroot and walnut hummus (page 300)

8. From the chapter of Roast, Grill & Barbecue:
Roast new potatoes with two mojo sauces (page 358)

9. From the chapter of Side Dishes:
Jerusalem artichoke frying pan gratin (page 382)

10. From the chapter of Sweet Asides:
Tea loaf of your choosing (either courgettes/zucchinis, carrots or beetroot) (page 394)

  1. WIll do my best to tackle most recipes on the list - getting started with the Parsnip and ginger soup (page 157) today and see where it leads...

So I made the Parsnip and ginger soup (page 157) as well as the Lentil and tomato salad (page 237) today - the soup was very "warming" with all that ginger and the spices (cardamon, cumin and cayenne pepper). And the Lentil salad was a big hit with those Honey-roasted tomatoes - even tomatoes at this time of year are suitable for that recipe.

  2. There will be lots of delicious food ahead this month. These are my choices:

    Chile, cheese and rosemary polenta with tomato sauce
    Celery, orange and pecans
    Parsnip and ginger soup
    Hot squash foldover
    Kale speltotto with goat´s cheese
    Beet and walnut hummus
    Roast new potatoes with two mojo sauces
    Jerusalem artichoke frying pan gratin

  5. Hello Andrea and fellow members! For the month of November I shall prepare Kale speltotto with goat´s cheese, and
    Celery, orange and pecans. I shall see beyond that since this is Thanksgivng month and I've quite a lot of visitors coming in. See you all soon.

    I'll make
    -celery salad, p. 116
    -parsnip soup, p. 157 (tons of parsnips already in my fridge my CSA!)
    -tea loaf (probably butternut squash and raisin due to the large amount from my CSA, again)

    Here are my selections for the month:

    Parsnip and ginger soup (page 157)

    Roast new potatoes with two mojo sauces (page 358)

    I might make the soup this weekend - it's cold and rainy and that soup sounds so warming.

    1. Teresa, cold and rainy seems far away these days - we are having springtime weather - incredible! I do not know whether to be happy about all these warm fall days though. Seems to me that the weather is definitely changing for the warmer.

  9. Hi Andrea! I can't believe how far we've gotten in the book. So many delicious dishes we've made!

    I don't know what all I will get up to, but for the moment, I'm thinking Parsnip and ginger soup, and Lentil and tomato salad. The new potatoes look delicious... we'll see! Sorry I'm not as decisive as I'd like. Lots up in the air. Hope you are having a wonderful fall day!

  10. Hi Andrea, I finally decided today (it's the 7th), that I'd better skip November. I not only am getting my condo ready so The Gant can have it for a rental for the skiing season but I also am packing for being away from Aspen for 5 1/2 months. A little overwhelming. Back next month when I get settled. Also, I'm up for a make-up week anytime.
